& Treating Allergies in Dogs & Cats
The Animal Care Center professionals bring years of experience to diagnosing allergies in pets. We work closely with you to identify the offending allergens and initiate effective and appropriate treatments.
Pets Have Allergies, Too!
Your pet can suffer an allergic reaction to many things, including:
- Flea bites
- Dust mites
- Pollen on trees, weeds, and grasses
- Wool and carpet fibers
Some pets are even allergic to other animals. Most often, we begin to notice symptoms in patients between six months and three years old, although the emergence of allergies can happen at any time in your pet’s life.
Skilled Professionals with Cutting-Edge Diagnostic Tools
Testing your pet for allergies can be frustrating. Our experience and record of success in diagnosing small animal allergies prevents wasted time on guesswork, and the expense of seeing a specialist. We are successful for two important reasons:
- In addition to our in-depth physical exam, we take time to listen and explore every possibility for your pet’s symptoms.
- We use cutting-edge diagnostics from either Bio-Medical Services or Hemopet, for less invasive testing and rapid results.
Once we receive the test results, treatment is customized to address your pet’s specific needs and lifestyle.
Testing for Allergens
Once we complete a thorough physical exam and obtain a medical history, we may recommend the ACTT Allergy Management Program. A simple blood test is taken and sent to Bio-Medical Services for testing. This IgE serum test indicates sensitivity to a variety of indoor and outdoor allergens, as well as food and insect allergy testing as needed. This process is much easier on your pet than sedation or shaving for invasive procedures.
When food sensitivities are suspected, we may use Hemopet’s NutriScan tests for the 20 most commonly ingested foods. This is a simple and convenient saliva test, with results expected in approximately two weeks. Watch this brief video about the NutriScan test.
Immunotherapy for Pets
Based on test results, we may recommend immunotherapy for your pet. This is a safe and effective desensitizing treatment that builds immunity to certain allergens. Immunotherapy actually reorients the immune system by administering increasing doses of allergens to accustom the body to the substance and build tolerance.
Based on test results, we formulate a treatment that is specific to your pet’s needs.

Common Symptoms of Allergies in Pets
The most common symptom for pets with allergies is evident on the skin and coat. Skin may be itchy, red, scaly, or irritated, usually around the face, feet, belly, groin, and rump. Chewing and itching produces hot spots of hair loss and inflamed skin, leading to infection. Food allergies may cause chronic ear infection or licking and chewing the feet.
A common allergy symptom in cats is excessive grooming leading to hair loss. Other symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, or respiratory conditions such as asthma, sneezing, and nasal discharge.
In addition, some dog breeds are more prone to allergies than others, such as retrievers, boxers, terriers, and shih-tzus.
